Our institution does not use faculty rankings nor do we have tenure.  A
J.D. is considered an earned doctorate here.  I seem to recall that the ABA
some years back decreed that a J.D. was to be considered the equivelent of
a Ph.D. for purposes of tenure, etc.  Of course, that is only helpful
assuming that an academic institution will follow what the ABA says.
