Call for Submissions
NLI invites proposals for presentations that focus on effective leaders in
an era of organizational restructuring and constant technological,
economic, and regulatory change. We've provided some suggestions for
interesting and relevant proposals, but these should in no way be
considered exhaustive. NLI welcomes innovative ideas and approaches.

About the Conference
Managing organizational change is perhaps the most difficult challenge
facing leaders today in every type of organization. At all levels, leaders
-- senior executives, middle managers, team leaders, group facilitators --
must not only guide their employees through change, but also prepare
themselves and their organizations to manage the continuous changes of
today and tomorrow. "Leaders and Change" will examine the complexities and
dynamics of leadership in a changing environment. The tools, knowledge, and
experience leaders need to guide their organizations into the future will
be explored through questions such as:
* Who are the leaders who have led the change effort?
* What lessons have they learned?
* What skills do they need to guide their organizations into the future?
* How can they prepare their organizations for continuous change?
The conference audience will consist of executives, managers, HRD
professionals, and organizational development consultants from the private,
not-for-profit, and government sectors, as well as university professors
focusing on business and organizational change.
I. The Leader
While the trait theory of leadership has been largely discredited, much can
be learned by looking at individuals leading successful change efforts
within organizations of all types.
* What personal characteristics or behaviors appear most linked to
positive organizational outcomes?
* How do leaders organize people to achieve change?
* As change agents, which functions of their position do leaders
emphasize?
II. The Organization
Leaders direct, mold, and reshape their organizations in response to
external change and in order to implement internal change.
* What structures and systems work best when dealing with continuous
change?
* How does an organization balance flexibility with clarity and
predictability?
* How is technology, the catalyst of so much change, both an ally and a
hurdle to organizations coping with change?
III. The External Environment
Whether profit or not-for-profit, organizations have a bottom line when
fulfilling a mission or serving clients.
* How do leaders effectively respond to their external environment while
addressing the required changes of their organization?
* What can leaders do to heighten their organization's awareness of the
external environment (e.g., knowledge of customer needs)?
IV. Models of Leadership for Change
A variety of theories and models have been developed as guidance for
leaders in today's organizational world.
* How are these theories and models applied within organizations?
* What convinces a leader to adopt a new model in creating change?
* What does the experience with various models reveal?
* How can organizations best capture the value of change-process
theories?
* What are the practical similarities and differences between current
theories and models?
The conference will be held at:
Inn and Conference Center
University of Maryland University College
College Park, Maryland
