Dear colleagues,

Below is an announcement for a research professorship, to be located in the Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs at Stockholm University.  You will note that the focus of the professorship is on alcohol policy research.  A Swedish professor is equivalent to a full professor in the U.S.

The following comments are unofficial, from me, and not from the University. Since it is primarily a research position, a knowledge of Swedish is not required.  The job of professor enjoys high esteem in Sweden (more mothers would want that for their child than would want lawyer or doctor!). However, you should be aware that the salary for the professorship is unlikely to be above USD $55,000 per year.

The research Centre has been in operation for a year -- its website is http://www.sorad.su.se   By now we are a group of about 12 staff, but we are still very much in the phase of opening up new possibilities.  The Centre is committed to operating collegially. And now and here is a very good time and place to be a scholar interested in alcohol policy research.

Please note that the firm deadline for applications is April 15.  Get an application in by then, even if you have to send more materials later to perfect it.

This is an unusual opportunity, and I would urge anyone who meeting the qualifications to consider making an application.  Robin Room

Stockholm University

invites applications for a position as Professor in Alcohol and Drug Research at the Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs.

Background

Sweden’s membership of the European Union, as well as the general internationalization of drinking habits, etc., has posed new challenges to Swedish alcohol policies. The economic integration implies increasing difficulties to apply the instruments traditionally central to Swedish alcohol politics. These trends emphasize the need for improved knowledge not only about the development of alcohol consumption and damages, but also about the impact of different measures to influence this development. The European region of the World Health Organization (WHO) has also by a range of decisions spotlighted the need to follow the development in the alcohol area, and to strengthen knowledge concerning the effects of different measures with a view to coming to grips with the growing damages, not least in Central and Eastern Europe. Sweden is an active participant in this cooperation.

This is a major part of the background for the creation of the Centre for Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs at Stockholm University. The objective is to form an interdisciplinary environment with an emphasis on Social Research. In the national budget bill for the fiscal year 1999 Government proposed that the Centre be reinforced with another professorial Chair, applications for which are now invited. The University encourages particularly applications from candidates with a research specialization on alcohol policy, including the effects of different policy measures, but also experience from neighbouring research areas, such as research on alcohol consumption and alcohol problems, and drug policy, are seen as important qualifications.

Duties of the Chair

The professor is expected primarily to do research but also to teach and to supervise postgraduate students within the area of the Chair, with an emphasis on alcohol politics. Also public information on science, including participation in the public debate, is part of the duties.

Qualification requirements

In order to be hired as a professor, the applicant shall document academic expertise and pedagogical expertise. A considerably higher level of expertise shall be required than what is the minimum requirement to qualify as an associate professor.

Bases for assessment

Special weight shall be given primarily to research expertise, and secondarily to pedagogic expertise. Weight is also attached to administrative skills and to ability to give information on research and development work.

Gender equality

The majority of professors at the faculty are men. Applications from female applicants are particularly welcome.

Salary is negotiable.
