In compound sentences, such the one you instance, there can be deletion of almost any verb: Lee came from the aristocracy; Grant from the working class. One fought for the South; the other for the North. > ---------- > From: Don Stewart > Reply To: Assembly for the Teaching of English Grammar > Sent: Monday, May 21, 2001 6:47 PM > To: [log in to unmask] > Subject: Re: Verb aspect and ellipsis > > Can't ellipsis also come from "had-deletion"? > > "I had the swordfish; my wife, the filet mignon. > > To join or leave this LISTSERV list, please visit the list's web interface > at: > http://listserv.muohio.edu/archives/ateg.html > and select "Join or leave the list" > > Visit ATEG's web site at http://ateg.org/ > > To join or leave this LISTSERV list, please visit the list's web interface at: http://listserv.muohio.edu/archives/ateg.html and select "Join or leave the list" Visit ATEG's web site at http://ateg.org/
