The inadequacy of the information currently being circulated was not the subject of our request for help. A starting point for locating missing information on Rowland is my title New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A. In preparing the original and revised editions of those books, we spent a great deal of time with Sam Shoemaker's daughters, particularly Nickie Haggart in Florida; at Episcopal Church Archives in Austin, Texas; at Hartford Seminary archives; at Calvary Episcopal Church archives at nearby St. Georges Parish in New York; at Stepping Stones archives; at the home of James Draper Newton and Eleanor Forde Newton in Florida; at Calvary Church itself in New York; at MRA offices in Washington, D.C., and in correspondence with many Oxford Group leaders here and in England and Canada. Jared will have to do his own homework on that one. Suffice it to say that Shoemaker correspondence to and from Rowland, Shoemaker's personal journal entries about Bill Wilson and Rowland, pictures of the businessman's group to which Wilson and Rowland belonged, notes in Lois Wilson's diary, notes in the papers of Jim Newton, materials on Rowland Hazard at Peace Dale Library and at the main Brown University Library are just a few of the items never examined or mentioned by White and others. You can find ample specific documentation in the pages and appendices of New Light. As to the topic of my letter, we want to do the same kind of job on Christian Endeavor that we did on Shoemaker, on the Oxford Group, on Anne Smith, on Dr. Bob's library, and so on. Personal interviews, trips to libraries and archives and churches and universities and headquarters locations, correspondence with leaders, and review of papers and books is now in progress. My article on Christian Endeavor which you graciously reprinted is just the kickoff. My letter asking help of ATHG friends is designed to obtain information about CE commentaries and about its relationship the temperance, anti-war, and political issues. Such involvement did not diminish its religious program or its contribution to AA, but it is part of the picture that will enable fruitful comparison of its influence with the supposed influence of the Washingtonians and the definite impact of Oxford Group materials on Alcoholics Anonymous God Bless, Dick B. -----Original Message----- From: Alcohol and Temperance History Group [mailto:[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of Jared Lobdell Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 4:08 AM To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Research on United Christian Endeavor Society Which new materials on Rowland Hazard is Dick Burns referring to in his posting on Christian Endeavor? and what do they show? -- Jared Lobdell
