Dear List Members

My apologies for the cross posting but I am casting a wide net looking for
US based information re Townsend Duryea.
Townsend arrived in New South Wales apparently in 1855 before moving onto
South Australia and opening his Daguerreotype Studio in March 1855.
He went onto be an important South Australian photographer (see
http://www.fusion.com.au/duryea/ ) despite the destruction by fire of his
studio in April 1875.

It seems that before leaving New York for Australia he was involved in
Photography having applied for a patent:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyononda/patents/Patents1850-1854.htm
9018 Townsend Duryea, Williamsburg, Kings Co., machine for polishing
daguerreotype-plates, 6/15/1852

Townsend (born 1823) and his Brother Sanford (father's name Hewlett) both
worked as photographers in South Australia.
Townsend apparently married three times, (1) was to a Madalina who was
apparently the mother of Townsend Jnr and (2) was to Elizabeth Mary (or
Murray) Smith. I can find no record of these marriages or Townsend Jnr's
birth in South Australia, Victoria or Tasmania - the states where apparently
Townsend lived and worked.

Other secondary source biographical material I have says Townsend was a
Unitarian.

Given that New York resources tend to be scarce down here in the very deep
South,
I would be very appreciative if anyone can provide ANY additional
information re Townsend Duryea, his family, education or work in New York
prior to coming to South Australia.

Regards
Jenny
