Unfortunately that is the way the newssites are going. Two suggestions for
folks

1. create a common registration that you will use for all such sites. You
are NOT required to provide valid data. I use the same login and password
for all news sites.

2. use a service such as BugMeNot http://bugmenot.com/

And if you follow Peter's other excellent suggestion, and use Firefox
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ (or Mozilla
http://www.mozilla.org/) for your browsing, you can get an extension at the
BugMeNot site so that the login details are a mere right-click away (or
control-click for Mac users).
