McGovern Research Center Assistant



            The Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library has
an opening for a full-time assistant in the John P. McGovern Historical
Collections & Research Center.  The McGovern Center has unique collections
of manuscripts, serials, books, and photographs documenting the history of
healthcare.  The person in this position will provide clerical and technical
support in several areas - maintenance of the archival serial collections,
cleaning documents, scanning documents and photographs, typing inventories
of collections, and general help in arranging archival collections.  Client
assistance will include pulling and reshelving boxes of records,
photocopying rare materials, and monitoring use of the historical
collections.



            This position requires two to three years of college (or
equivalent technical school/job experience) and excellent computer skills.
Most of the tasks require work at the computer keyboard.  The indexing and
filing tasks require accurate use of the English language alphabet.
Preference will be given to individuals with experience in library work and
with a bachelor's degree.  The successful candidate must be familiar with or
learn to successfully use word processing software, the Access database
software, the scanning software, and the Library's online catalog system.
Training will be provided on scanning images.   This position requires
careful attention to detail and a pleasant manner when interacting with the
clients.  Physical requirements include the ability to lift boxes (40
pounds) at height of head for shelving and climbing staircase ladders for
retrieving or shelving archival boxes.



The successful candidate must be able to handle a variety of complex tasks
and coordinate their work with other individuals within the McGovern Center.
This position will work closely with the Archivist for the Houston Medical
History Project.  Current McGovern Center projects include the enhancement
of its web page, further development of the collection on Texas medical
history, processing manuscript collections, and reference services to a
varied clientele.



The HAM-TMC Library is one of the largest health sciences libraries in the

<http://mcgovern.library.tmc.edu/>  )  Located in the Texas Medical Center,
it serves two medical schools, three nursing schools, and six major
hospitals.  This position will work mainly at the Library's new facility,
the Historical Research Center, located at 8272 El Rio, Suite 190.  Parking
is free in this office/warehouse complex.



This is a permanent position with starting salary at $ 26,000.00 and is
commensurate with experience.  Fringe benefits include medical, dental and
life insurance.   TIAA/CREF retirement plan is available. Twelve days
