Dr. Clifton H. Johnson Will Deliver Mayo Lecture February 25

Dr. Clifton H. Johnson, founder and emeritus executive director of the
Amistad Research Center at Tulane University, will deliver the 5th
annual Mayo Lecture on February 25 at the Cushing Memorial Library and
Archives. His lecture, "The Birth and Development of the Amistad
Research Center," will trace the history of Amistad from its early
beginnings to becoming the nation's largest independent archives that
documents the history of African Americans, the African Diaspora and
other ethnic groups (http://www.amistadresearchcenter.org).

"Throughout his life, Dr. Johnson has displayed incredible courage
and integrity," observes Rebecca Hankins, Curator of Africana at
Cushing Library. "Growing up in the Deep South at a time when racism
was rampant, the Klan was openly supported, and being a white male was
the ultimate privileged status, Dr. Johnson gave up the comfort of that
status to collect, preserve, and disseminate the history of African
Americans."

The Mayo Lecture, which will take place at 4:00 p.m., focuses on topics
related to the history of books and libraries, book collecting, and
bibliography and textual studies. Co-funded by the English Department
and the Library, it honors the memory of Thomas Mayo, pioneer library
director (1919-1944) and former head of the English Department
(1944-1952). For more information regarding the Mayo Lecture or Cushing
