Arkansas History Commission (State Archives) Director

Salary:         Up to $74,200 depending on experience and qualifications

Known as the State Historian, this position serves as a leader in regard to matters of state and local history.  Answers to a board of commissioners, has charge over a professional and support staff of 20, and an operating budget in excess of $1.3 million.  Must possess extensive knowledge of Arkansas history, principles of archival management, modern archival/curatorial processes, and experience in both fiscal and personnel management.  Excellent research and writing skills are required.  Must have the propensity to relate to and serve the public, liaison with other archival institutions, and report to state legislature. Government experience would be helpful, but not necessarily required.

 

The person selected must have been granted a doctoral degree in the field of history by a duly accredited institution of higher education, or the commission may select a person who, as determined by the commission, has the equivalent of a doctoral degree.  This determination shall be based upon the academic background, editorial ability, knowledge of and interest in history, and experience on that field.
