independent scholar
The term "independent scholar" can also refer to
someone who collects materials that are central to a discipline, and
thereby becomes an expert in a way that's not typical of academic
scholars. In many cases these collectors have jobs that are not
related to the discipline.
An independent scholar can also be a fan or student of a
discipline who works in some non-academic job.
I know one "independent scholar" who is a heart surgeon
and rare book collector. Another works at a desk in a DC government
agency. Both might claim or be given the title if, e.g., they appear
at a conference that is mainly populated by scholars with academic
jobs.

"Independent Scholar" means either someone who
does not need a job or (more likely) someone who hasn't been able to
get or keep one. Ron (who speaks from experience

Michie Hesselbrock is very real. She teaches alcohol topics in
social work in Connecticut.

PS: It has
to depend on what you are good at. And perhaps also how much you are
willing to compromise (like making a living any other
way).

Ron,
Hesselbrock is a pseudonym, I think. I'm pretty sure I know who
wrote it (and would like to read it myself). Try your question
on the AA history list.

Can one make a living as an independent scholar?
