     Job characteristics: Employees in this position provide reference
services to patrons of the Utah History Research Center, a joint research
facility providing access to the collections of the Utah State Archives and
the Utah State Historical Society. These services involve assessing the
research needs of patrons, providing guidance in the research process,
offering assistance in locating relevant sources in the collections,
retrieval of requested materials, taking requests from off-site patrons by
telephone, mail, and email, conducting limited research for off-site
patrons, responding to requests with information and copies of materials,
and develop collection guides and research aids.

     Tasks: Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or work unit
and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.  Acts as a
resource to provide information or determine the most effective way of
meeting the needs of management, staff, clients or customers.  Performs
descriptive and subject cataloging; creates original cataloging systems;
consults with public and school libraries and state agencies on problems in
cataloging and collection management; performs general consulting with
public libraries.  Provides technical assistance on agency issues, services,
program(s), and/or computer hardware and software, etc.

     Qualifications (includes knowledge, skills, and abilities required upon
entry into position and trainable after entry into position): Knowledge of
or Skills/Ability to principles, theories, and practices of archiving; deal
with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism;
develop and/or implement new policies/procedures/standards and/or
rules/regulations; laws governing access to public and private records
(Government Records Access and Management Act); research methods,
techniques, and/or sources of information; communicate information and ideas
clearly, and concisely, in writing; read and understand information
presented in writing; principles, theories, and practices of records
management; principles theories and practices of micrographic technology;
speak clearly, concisely and effectively; listen to, and understand,
information and ideas as presented verbally.

     Other Requirements: Risks which require the use of special safety
precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines,
working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc. The work
requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking
over rough terrain or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching,
stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; recurring lifting of
moderately heavy items such as typewriters and record boxes. The work may
require specific but common physical characteristics and abilities such as
lifting up to 50 pounds, above-average agility, and dexterity.
