The History and Science Manager performs professional administrative and historical services in the direction and implementation of programs of the History & Science Division. Professional historical services include serving as the Historian for the City of Sacramento and Sacramento County; administration of the City and County Archives; historic and regulatory services for the Old Sacramento Historic District; maintenance and expansion of the regional historical artifact-based museum collections of the City and County; supervision of interpretive and volunteer programs at the City's Historic Cemetery; and provision for the maintenance and preservation of the historic features of the Cemetery. As the History and Science Division's administrator, the position provides management of all Division programs, budgets, support services to local museums, and service as Executive Director of a 15 member City/County Commission of History and Science. This position has extensive contact with business and political leaders, public agencies and members of the public. Responsibilities include the direct and indirect supervision of professional, technical, clerical, and maintenance personnel, and volunteers. THE ORGANIZATION Sacramento Archives is one of eleven divisions within the Convention, Culture and Leisure Department. The Department also includes Sacramento, Crocker Art Museum, Metropolitan Arts and Museum Collection Center, Sacramento Convention Center, Old City Cemetery, Sacramento Marina, Capital City Golf, Old Sacramento, Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town and Discovery Museum. THE SACRAMENTO REGION The City of Sacramento, with a growing population of 437,000, is the cultural, educational, business, & governmental center of a four-county metropolitan region. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as Executive Director of the Sacramento Commission of History and Science (a City/County Commission); serves as the City and County professional historian; serves on the Board of Directors of Old Sacramento Management, Inc.; consults with and advises other agencies, such as the Redevelopment Agency, on plans for the restoration of Old Sacramento; provides historic and regulatory services and approves certain activities within the Old Sacramento Historic Districts; inspects structures being renovated and submits ideas relating to their refurbishment; supervises the staff and operation of the Historic City Cemetery. Establishes division of History and Science goals and objectives; determines priorities and adjusts programs to meet department and Citywide or County objectives; determines acceptance by gift or purchase of historic artifacts, papers, photographs, etc., to add to the City's historic collections. Accepts, preserves, and provides public access to the public records of the City of Sacramento and Sacramento County and several special districts; performs academic research and renders decisions that are based upon that research and applicable rules, regulations, policies, and programs; prepares written reports. Prepares Division and special events budget. Coordinates recruitment, training and assignment of volunteers; plans and directs the work of staff. Performs other or related work as required. QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience: Four years of experience in administrative work involving the management of a historical agency, museum, or a similar organization or institution, including responsibility for supervision, collections, archives, exhibit preparation, public relations, and research. Education: Graduation from an accredited college with specialization in history or a related field. Substitution: A Masters Degree or Ph.D. in history or a related field may substitute for the required experience. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Driver's License: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. THE SELECTION PROCEDURE: This recruitment is open until filled.
