PS – There was a story on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday about how Americans know more about The Simpsons than the Founding Fathers of our country.

And if THAT doesn't sum up (horribly) current American culture, James, I don't know what does!  I'll us it in my next sermon.

Thanks,

Art

Laura,

I know what you mean. I am a 1994 high school graduate. People say to me, “Oh, you wouldn’t know; that was before your time”. Argh! In many cases I actually know more about it (a particular event) than they do!  I have an interest and have actually studied it; they, on the other hand, were just there and saw it on the news. J

True, true...

I am a 1995 high school graduate, and the reason why I know much of the cultural and social histories of the '60s and '70s is simply because it was an interest of mine.  I know some of the things that happened in the '80s and '90s too, but I have to say there was a time (in high school) I paid very little attention to the news.  Some things I have to catch up on.  And my history classes, from high school through college, discussed events no further than Vietnam, and it barely even touched on that!   Anything I know post-WWII is mostly because of personal interest and self-education.

Its a shame there are not many young people who pursue historical information for their own education.

I remember my shock at talking with a co-worker, a 1989 high school grad.  He was in the gifted program at his HS and attended several years of college.  He had never heard of the Weathermen, SDS, or the shootings at Kent State.

It is hard for me to understand how something that was so earth-shattering when I was in high school (I know, that dates me pretty well) has completely disappeared from the consciousness of people less than 20 years younger.  No wonder we keep repeating history rather than learning from it!

Our University is proud that on March 31st that we are hosting Lech
Walesa, Polish Solidarity leader,
to speak on campus.  Our provost was granting an interview to our
student newspaper about this
and as she waxed on and on about Lech, his contributions and place in
20th Century history, it began
to dawn on her that the reporter had never heard of this person,
Solidarity, the Polish unions, and its
effect in the breakup of Soviet domination.    And of course, I had a
graduate student last year, that
when I asked her to check through our sheet music for marches by Sousa,
she'd never heard of him.

Ah well, back when I rode pterodactyls to school .
