The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College invites applications for its paid internship program in summer 2006. The Center's Native American Honors Internships program provides select Native students with quality, mentored paid practical experience at the Center, in Durango, Colorado, which is in the Four Corners Region. Working with a variety of types of special collections, the intern will undertake an arrangement and description project, help provide reference service to researchers, and participate in other library/archives activities at the Delaney Southwest Research Library.

The Center of Southwest Studies was founded in 1964, the first Southwest Studies center in the country. The Center is located in a new $7.6 million 50,000 SF building. The Center, which is a core academic program of Fort Lewis College, collects and disseminates information about the Southwest.  The Center functions as a museum, library, and archives, and as a forum for public programming, to enhance people's understanding of the Greater Southwest. The Center's special collections subject strengths include: Native Americans of the Southwest; narrow gauge railroads of the San Juan Basin; local/regional affairs/politics and government; mining of coal and precious metals in the Four Corners; and water and water rights, and energy issues in the Four Corners region.

Description of the internships (starting and ending dates are flexible; available mid-May through September 2006):

Category 1: Professional Internship.  One-to-four-month internship, 35 hours per week.  Stipend: $2,000/month. This category is generally for persons who have completed college and have an interest in a career that includes archival work. Professional Interns are considered exempt staff employees of the college and work under an employment contract for their services.  They receive health insurance benefits and retirement benefits and accrue leave at the rate of 16 hours per month for annual leave and 10 hours per month sick leave.  This internship category may also include travel funding for approved professional field trips.  These interns will have completed a bachelor's degree, or may be taking a leave from academic studies, or may use this experience towards academic credit in an approved course of study.

Category 2: Fort Lewis College Part-time Student Summer Internship.  This category is for persons desiring to have an initial experience in archival work. Internship experience with the option of one to nine hours of academic credit. Student participation of 45 hours per credit hour is required.  Students will be paid on an hourly basis, at $8.00 to $10.00 per hour (depending on qualifications and experience).  If applying for this internship, specify how many credit hours you are applying to be paid for as your internship.

Requirements for all internship categories:
