Dear Colleagues,

The Marist College Archives and Special Collections is currently conducting a
survey of environmental materials (such as legal papers, personal papers,
interviews, etc.) concerning the Scenic Hudson Decision, the legal dispute
between Scenic Hudson, Inc. and Consolidated Edison (1963-1980). This case
launched the modern environmental movement and set many important precedents
in environmental law, including the right of citizens to speak in court on
behalf of the environment.

I was wondering if anyone might have any materials relating to this case or
any ideas on who to contact for these materials. Please email me at
[log in to unmask] if anyone has any thoughts or ideas! Thank you!

Background on the case:
In 1963 Consolidated Edison applied to the Federal Power Commission for a
license to build the largest hydro-electric plant in the world at the base of
Storm King Mountain in order to provide backup energy to New York City. This
plant would have severely damaged the scenic quality of the Hudson River and
killed large quantities of Hudson River fish (mainly the striped bass).

The Scenic Hudson Preservation Conference was formed in 1963 by a group of
concerned citizens who wanted to protect the natural beauty of the river and
its importance to the history of the Hudson River Valley. Legal proceedings
endured for 17 years before Scenic Hudson (and other environmental groups that
formed as a result of this case) finally prevailed in 1980 when Con Edison
agreed to abandon the plant at Storm King Mountain.

Thank you again for you time and help!
