I've never heard of extrapolating photographs, simply because the
thicknesses vary, and curled photographs can take lots of additional room.
If these are stored on
shelves, like files, you might just measure an inch, count them, and then
multiply
that by total inches.

Subject: Photograph: Item Count or Linear feet?

Hello everyone, thanks for having me around!

I work at an organization that has, among other things, over 100,000
photographs. We are in the very very early stages of rescuing our archival
collection and starting anew.

I've been tasked with starting a preliminary inventory. I've got archival
training and background, but I'm still at a bit of a loss...

When attempting to get a broad picture of photographs, what do people
consider the stanrdard? counting one shelf and extraploating it out for x
number of photos, or as you would for documents, x linear feet?

I've searched through the Archives-L postings and haven't been able to come
across an answer...and I fear it is just my lack of knowledge that is
letting me down.

Hope someone can help!

Thanks
Tim
