JCDL Workshop on Digital Curation and Trusted Repositories
Dear Listmembers,
On behalf of a researcher I am looking for papers
(especially a diary) of a specific Archibald Gracie. This is what I
know about him:
Archibald
Gracie was a Lieutenant in the United States Army who led the military escort to
the Indian treaty council at WallaWalla for Governor of Washington Territory,
Isaac I. Stevens, in the summer of 1855. He had forty men under his command,
including Lawrence Kip. Kip and Gracie wrote diaries and Kip's has been
published under the title "Army Life on the Pacific: A Journal of the Expedition
against the Northern Indians, the Tribes of the Coeur d'Alenes, Spokans, and
Pelouzes, in the Summer of 1858 and "The Indian Council at WallaWalla," Sources
of the History of Oregon, volume one, Part II (Eugene, Oregon, 1897). Gracie,
according to a letter his son, also named Archibald Gracie, kept a diary of the
WallaWalla Council as well--a diary that the son had in his possession. The son
was also writing a book about his father as was Hazard Stevens, the son of Isaac
I. Stevens, and the two of the m corresponded in 1908.
My thanks in advance for any
and all assistance.
