PLEASE EXCUSE ANY CROSS-POSTINGS

Hello,

For those of you who are planning to attend the Society of California
Archivists Annual General Meeting in San Francisco, from April 27-29, 2006,
as well as to those of you who are not, please be aware of two continuing
education opportunities prior to this meeting that you won't want to miss.
Both of these will be offered as pre-conference workshops on Thursday,
April 27, at the Stanford Court Hotel, and registration at the conference
is not necessary to attend:

1. BUILDING DIGITAL COLLECTIONS: Offered by the Society of American
Archivists.
Are you responsible for planning and implementing digitization projects at
the beginning and intermediate level? Before you begin, it's important to
understand the concepts and strategies that are essential to successful
implementation of your collection development or access project. Rather
than a technical how-to, this seminar provides an overview of basic
decisions you must make before you start and while you are developing
digital collections and a digital collection repository program.

This seminar will discuss these basic questions: Why digitize? What to
digitize? How to digitize? Who should be digitizing? What next?

Designed for archivists and others who are responsible for planning and
implementing digitization projects at the beginning and intermediate level,
this seminar will also explore selection criteria for digital projects;
developing workflow models; and estimating the cost and resource needs for
digital projects. Case studies, real-world examples, and citations to
published resources are presented in a format that allows time for
questions, interaction and discussion.

Workshop presenters are Greg Colati, Head of Special Collections at George
Washington University and Jessica Branco, of the National Museum of
American History of the Smithsonian Institution. The registration fee is
$145 for SAA members and $215 for non-members, with a discount for the
latter group available only through SCA's website.

2. PRESERVATION OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS, Presented by Amigos Library
Services.
This full-day course covers the diverse group of materials and formats
collectively known as audiovisual media: videotapes, audiotapes, motion
picture films and film strips, LPs, CDs, and CD-ROMs. Participants are
taught the various causes of damage and deterioration to audiovisual
materials, and ways to minimize damage through proper storage, care, and
handling. Identification of different formats, repair and reformatting
options, and security of audiovisual media are also addressed.

This course will be taught by Rebecca Elder, a book and paper conservator
with extensive experience, who is based in Austin, Texas. The registration
fee for this workshop is $60 for SCA members, and $85 for non-members.
