Assistant Director for Archives and Manuscripts
Rare Book and Manuscript Library

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

The Rare Book and Manuscript Library of Columbia University seeks an 
experienced professional to manage and develop its Archives and 
Manuscript Department and to assist the Director in the overall program 
planning and administration of the Library.  One of the world's leading 
special collections, the Rare Book and Manuscript Library owns over 
500,000 rare books in some 20 book collections, and almost 28 million 
manuscripts in nearly 3,000 separate manuscript collections.  The 
Archives and Manuscript Department is the University's principal 
repository for collections of original papers, letters, manuscripts and 
documents.  Holdings include important original resources in nearly all 
subjects and academic disciplines. The collections are especially rich 
in English and American history and literature.  Among its many notable 
collections are the papers of John Jay, the papers of the Carnegie 
Corporation and related organizations, the Bakhmeteff Archive of Russian 
and East European History and Culture and the Herbert H. Lehman papers. 

Reporting to the Director of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the 
Assistant Director will supervise a strong team of 5 professionals, 1 
support staff position, and several student assistants who are committed 
to bringing the resources of the Library to the attention of students, 
faculty and scholars.  The ideal candidate will implement effective 
approaches to building, processing, and promoting access to 
collections.  He/she will exhibit strong leadership skills, and bring 
intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm to defining the future role of 
archives and manuscripts in an academic setting. Responsibilities will 
include:

·        Oversight of collection development, including review and 
development of collection policies, actively identifying and building 
the collections, working closely with donors and dealers in assessing 
and acquiring collections.

      ·        Management of technical services, including accessioning, 
arrangement and description, finding aid preparation, offsite storage 
preparation, and digital        
            projects. 

      ·        Oversight and promotion of archives and manuscript 
related public services, including reference services, instruction and 
liaison to faculty and students, and  
            exhibitions.  

      ·        Development of proposals for grant funded projects, 
assisting the Director in special projects and general program planning 
and administration including
           recommendations for staffing, budget and equipment. 

Requirements are: An accredited MLS with archival specialization and 5 
years experience in the management/administration of a university level 
manuscript or archive collection (or an equivalent combination of 
education and experience); demonstrated knowledge of national archival 
standards and best practices including familiarity with EAD and other 
intellectual control methodologies; familiarity with preservation and 
digitization practices; excellent supervisory and donor relations 
skills; a strong commitment to enriching access to information, and a 
willingness to take on responsibility and new challenges.  Preferred 
qualifications include an advanced degree in the humanities and reading 
knowledge of at least one modern European language.
