Although I have worked with educational archives, I have not worked with government or business archives. The municipality has 60 years of archival documents and photographs detailing the history of the area. The Village Clerk who worked at the municipality from its inception and had the prescience to retain these documents is available and the oral history will be taken. The Village Clerk collected all documents in scrapbooks, and crudely adhered them to pages. My first task will be to survey the documents with the Village Clerk and record both in writing and taping the descriptions and oral history of the Village. This is a priority as the Village Clerk is elderly and may not feel well enough to sort through all documents for descriptions in an intense way. I will also be setting up archival space, mission statement etc... I have a couple of immediate questions and hope that someone can answer. 1. Is there a standard method for assigning accession numbers to documents and photos or is the assignment somewhat idiosyncratic. I've asked a number of archivists, but none know the technical side. Do accession numbers relate to subject as a standard? i.e. Government officials, initial residential development etc... 2. When creating an electronic record, what software programs are typically used and what vendor/s carry such software? Thanks very much. Please answer directly to me. If members would like me to post any answers I receive, I'll be glad post comments. Florence Paisey MLS, MS, Ed.S.
