JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Position Title: Curator, Donald & Mary Hyde Collection of Dr. Samuel Johnson & Early Modern Books & Manuscripts Location: Houghton Library, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138 Duties and Responsibilities: Reporting to the Associate Librarian of Houghton Library for Collections, manages Hyde Collection of Dr. Samuel Johnson and Early Modern (17th- and 18th-century) collections; oversees management, care, development, and promotion of the collections through acquisitions; exhibitions, publications, and selection of materials for conservation and preservation; may direct or manage other related curatorial/program responsibilities, such as Houghton's annual concert series. Works closely w/other curators and w/Associate Librarian for Collections in long-range planning and establishing policies/procedures; advises/consults w/Associate Librarian for Technical Services and staff regarding cataloging priorities/issues concerning catalog access to collections; interacts w/researchers/faculty/students; participates in student seminars; answers reference collections queries; advises/consults w/Associate Librarian for Public Services on issues regarding access to Early Modern collections; assumes leadership roles in Library/University committees; participates in national professional/scholarly organizations; performs research on the collections, resulting in lectures and publications. Required education, experience, skills: ALA accredited MLS or equiv required, w/advanced degree in academic discipline related to holdings of the collections preferred. Familiarity w/17th- and 18th-century in England/Europe/North America required. Significant experience within a special collections library, preferably in an academic setting, including proven skills working with a variety of people. Knowledge of at least 2 European languages required. Knowledge of library systems/catalogs and Microsoft Office. Experience w/diverse research resources. Additional information: Houghton's Early Modern holdings are comprised of approximately 165,000 monographs in all languages and an estimated 1,000 codices and manuscript collections, largely American and British/European. The Hyde Collection, the recent bequest of Mary, Viscountess Eccles, considered one of the world's most important collections of eighteenth-century English literature, also includes material related to James Boswell, Hester Thrale Piozzi, and such Johnson friends and contemporaries as Tobias Smollett, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Alexander Pope, and David Garrick.
