The Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection is an international
center for scholarship, providing resources for study and publishing
scholarly works in Byzantine, Pre-Columbian, and Garden and Landscape
Studies. We are pleased to announce the following vacany:

Assistant Curator, Byzantine Photograph & Fieldwork Archives

General Functions
The Assistant Curator participates in the public, technical, and
administrative services operations of the Byzantine Photograph & Fieldwork
Archives of Dumbarton Oaks. The Assistant Curator reports to the Curator.
The Photo Archives contain more than 500,000 images in various formats.
Materials are cataloged and classified using locally-developed systems. In
addition to printed collections, images and their accompanying
documentation are stored digitally using Gallery Systems' EmbARK software.

Duties
- Accessions and catalogs materials in various formats using EmbARK
software; maintains standards and uses authority control tools to describe
images of art and architecture of the Byzantine period (335–1453 A.D.).
- Revises existing catalog entries in EmbARK database for consistency and
completeness in anticipation of public release of Dumbarton Oaks’s web
kiosk version of EmbARK, enabling remote searching of data and images by
scholars worldwide. Release is expected beginning in 2007.
- Assists staff, Fellows, and outside scholars, providing orientation to
the collections and instruction in the use of finding aids.
- Selects images for digitization, and works with scanning staff to ensure
quality control for completed scans and accompanying catalog entries.
- Prepares orders for digital images, photographs, transparencies, and
slides as requested; tracks orders and prepares invoices.
- Assists in maintenance of collections (negatives, color transparencies,
slides, photographs, fieldwork notebooks, videotapes, films, and digital
files). Performs basic-level conservation on collection materials.
- Supervises and trains temporary employees (office procedures, typing
labels, encapsulation of photographs, binding slides).
- Responds to reference and photo order inquiries by phone, mail, and
email.
- Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications
- Required: MLS or MA in Art History; undergraduate major in Art History
or Medieval Studies preferred. Reading knowledge of French or German.
Strong computer skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Preferred: Previous experience in a visual resources collection,
library, or museum.

Starting salary $35,000+, depending on experience.
