I've never been a freelance archivist, but I have worked as a professional 
genealogist.

Whatever you do, do not forget to allow for the full burden of the Social 
Security and Medicare
taxes. (Your employer pays half of the total.)

It would be a good idea to check on local and state taxes for the 
self-employed. You may or
may not be responsible for business property taxes. (I worked out of a 
rural area but I've lived
in large metropolitan areas.)

In addition to local, state, and Federal tax agency web sites, there are 
also Small Business Development
Centers (SBDCs) throughout the U.S. They are resource sites for people 
starting small businesses.
