Thinking Big, Even When You’re Small

The Archives staff of the 92nd Street Y will discuss the many challenges
and opportunities presented in being a small unit of a much larger, non-
archives organization.  The staff will share the history of the Archives
since its founding in 1979, and describe its growth and expansion in recent
years thanks to several large government and private foundation grants.
Current initiatives include a large backlog processing project, the
development of an extensive database of Y events from 1916 to the present,
and the creation of an in-house studio enabling the digitization of
recordings from the vast audiovisual holdings of the Archives.

The 92nd Street Y is one of New York’s premier Jewish cultural and
educational institutions.  Founded in 1874, the Y is many things to many
people, at once a lecture hall, a performance space, a school, a health
center, and a community organization.  The Y’s comprehensive Archives
documents virtually all of this unique history, and encompasses over 1,200
cubic feet of manuscript records, thousands of photographs, and over 15,000
audio and video recordings of Y-sponsored events. Visit the Y Archives at

Steven Siegel, Library Director and Archivist, fashioned the Y’s archives
from the neglected treasure-trove that had accumulated for many decades in
storage rooms throughout the building. His efforts from 1980 to 1983 were
supported by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the
National Historical Publications and Records Commission. He became the
director of the Y’s 30,000-volume library in 1983. Simultaneously he has
provided archival services to both outside researchers and Y staff members.
He was pleased to be able to hire several professionals in recent years
thanks to grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Save
America’s Treasures, and the Ridgefield Foundation.

Christine Di Bella, Project Archivist, has led the Y’s backlog processing
project since September 2003.  Prior to arriving at the Y, she was an
assistant archivist in the University Archives and Records Program at the
Bentley Historical Library of the University of Michigan.  She received her
M.S. in Information from the School of Information at the University of
Michigan in 2000.  In May 2006 she will assume the position of Archivist
and Project Director for the Consortial Survey Initiative of the
Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries (PACSCL).

Dave Nolan, Audio Archivist, has been at the Y since September 2005. He
began recording poetry in 1985, documenting readings at The Poetry Project
at St. Mark’s Church-In-The-Bowery and producing a weekly radio program of
poetry readings for WBAI Pacifica Radio. From 1991 to 2001, he was the
audio archivist at HarperCollins Publishers, where he was nominated for a
Grammy in 2001 as the producer of Dylan Thomas – The Caedmon Collection. He
produced The Bukowski Sessions, The Allen Ginsberg Audio Collection, and
other new titles for the Caedmon label. He has been the supervisor of audio
recordings for the biennial People’s Poetry Gathering in lower Manhattan
and the production manager at the Bowery Poetry Club.
