Job Opening:  Archival Assistants (3)

• Mid-May through December 2006  (30 weeks)
• $12.00 /hour.      20 hours /week.     Flexible schedule – but must be able to work during regular working hours.
• Description:   The New Jersey Hispanic Research and Information Center / Newark Public Library wishes to hire three Archival Assistants to assist in the processing of Latino heritage archival collections, as part of a pioneering Puerto Rican Community Archives Project in New Jersey.  The positions are open to graduate and undergraduate students and to individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree seeking part-time work. 
• Duties:   Archival Assistants will be trained and will work under the supervision of the Project Archivist. Responsibilities will include processing, organizing, describing and working with the Project Archivist in the creation of finding aids for particular collections.   They will inventory and conduct basic preservation work, create descriptions, and collaborate in the initial processing of the collections of the Puerto Rican Communities of New Jersey.

• Have a background in Latino/Hispanic studies and good working knowledge of the Spanish language
• Have excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
• Have good writing skills and be comfortable with Windows-based operating systems
• Work well independently, with guidance from supervisor
• Experience working with archives and/or in libraries a plus

The Puerto Rican Community Archives at the NJHRIC is the first effort of its kind to create a collection of primary resources on the history and culture of New Jersey's Puerto Rican community. Its mission is to create a single comprehensive resource registering the history, culture and contributions of this previously underdocumented community of 20th century immigrants.
