Thanks, Bob Schmidt Archives Listserve Coordinator Miami University Archives Oxford, Ohio 45056 Tel: 513-529-6720 Email: [log in to unmask] _________________________________________________________ GRADUATE INTERNSHIPS IN ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS THE CENTER FOR WESTERN STUDIES 2006-2007 THE CENTER FOR WESTERN STUDIES: An outreach program of Augustana College, the Center is committed to the preservation and interpretation of the history and cultures of the Dakotas and Northern Plains. Holdings include over 4,000 linear feet of archives, a library of 35,000 books and bound periodicals, and art and museum collections. Major interpretive programs are the Dakota Conference on Northern Plains History, Literature, Art, and Archaeology, the Artists of the Plains Art Show and Sale, the Boe Forum on Public Affairs, exhibits, and book publishing. The Center is located in the new 22,000 s.f., $3.3 million Fantle Building on the campus of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. With over 150,000 residents, Sioux Falls is the financial, retail, and medical center of a three-state region. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: * Paid internship ($1,000 per month) with option of graduate credit * Full-time schedule (Monday-Friday and some weekends and evenings) * Assist professional staff with variety of educational programs related to the region * Daily schedule will consist of processing archival collections, providing reference assistance with research collections, and assisting staff with public programs * Occasional duties will include providing guided tours, speaking to visiting groups, installing exhibits, and supervising some student assistants and docents INTERNSHIP PERIOD: Preference given to candidate available full-time for 6-month period, beginning fall 2006, with possible extension to be determined at later date REQUIREMENTS: Intern candidate should be a graduate student in archives, special collections, or public history with significant experience in archival processing and automated collections management. Experience with Web-based collections descriptions an asset. Post-graduate internship possible.
