The Collection
The Manuscripts and Archives Division holds approximately 29,000 linear
feet of archival material in over 3,000 collections, dating from the third
millennium BCE to the current decade. The greatest strengths of the
Manuscripts and Archives Division are the papers and records of
individuals, families, and organizations, primarily from the New York
region. These collections, dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries,
support research in the political, economic, social, and cultural history

Job Requirements
ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library and Information Studies or
archival or information studies or Master’s degree in liberal arts or
humanities and successful completion of archival training.  Extensive
successfully demonstrated experience providing reference and other public
services in an archives or manuscripts repository.  Working knowledge of
historical research methodology and experience with standard bibliographic
tools.  Successfully demonstrated supervisory experience.  Successfully
demonstrated computer skills.  Excellent presentation, interpersonal, oral
and written communication skills.  Successfully demonstrated ability to
work cooperatively and productively with a highly diverse group of
colleagues operating in numerous and widely dispersed locations.
Successfully demonstrated experience overseeing public service operations
in an archives or manuscripts repository preferred.  Successfully
demonstrated experience processing collections of historical documents
preferred.  Background in American history preferred.  Reading knowledge of
at least one foreign language preferred.

Job Description
Under the direction of the Charles J. Liebman Curator of Manuscripts,
manages the Division’s public service to on-site and remote researchers.
Hires, trains, and supervises pages and Library Technical Assistants with
public service responsibilities.  Provides reference service for NYPL
Archives to internal and external patrons.  Develops, maintains, and
enforces public service policies and procedures for Manuscripts and
Archives collections and The New York Public Library Archives.  Produces
and coordinates the development of subject guides and other
access-enhancing tools.  Collaborates with Curator and Records Manager to
identify NYPL records of historical value for transfer to NYPL Archives.
Advises Curator and Head of Manuscripts Processing on prioritization of
NYPL Archives processing. Presents orientations on Manuscripts and Archives
and NYPL Archives holdings.  Administers exhibition loans.  Identifies and
prepares material from Manuscripts and Archives collections and NYPL
Archives for use in exhibitions, publications, public relations, and
special events as needed.  Serves on appropriate library committees and
task forces.  Performs related duties as required.
