Video oral history cataloguer. The HistoryMakers African American oral
history video archive seeks applications for a full-time cataloguer to work
at our Chicago headquarters, to begin immediately or by June 2006.  

The HistoryMakers is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the
creation of a national video archive of first person narratives by African
Americans who have made notable accomplishments in their fields and/or
significant contributions to the community, whether individually or as part
of an organization or movement. The HistoryMakers currently has a collection
of 1,300 interviews and the goal is to collect 5,000 interviews.

Job duties:  Help to create interview-level finding aids using a Microsoft
Word template; materials include video masters and access copies;
interview-related paper records such as correspondence, interviewee
questionnaires, production reports and biographical information; and copies
of interviewees' photographs.  Job duties would also include some assisting
with the beta testing phase of a digital video database: providing software
demonstration, training and help for on-site visitors and assisting with the
coordination of testbeds at several universities and libraries. This
database was created with funding from IMLS and in collaboration with
Carnegie Mellon University's Informedia Digital Video Library In addition,
duties may include other records management or archival work. 

Requirements:   Experience in cataloguing and indexing, familiarity with
Library of Congress Subject Headings and Authority Records, aptitude for
abstract writing, knowledge of U.S. history (especially African American
history), and the ability to quickly learn new software and to teach other
users who have varying levels of computer literacy. Bachelor's degree
required; master's in library science not required but advantageous, as is
knowledge of video, mark-up and metadata standards.  and experience with
academic research in the humanities.   

Starting salary : $28,000 per year. 

This job requires working out of our Chicago, Illinois office. No
re-location compensation is available.
