Ethnographic Field School

Announcement:  Brigham Young University Field School for Cultural Documentation is now accepting applications for Summer 2006

Course theme:  "By the Sweat of Their Brow: Changing Agrarian Culture in Utah Valley"

When and where: June 11 to July 1, 2006 on the campus of BYU and at field sites in Provo, Utah

Aims and scope:  The annual BYU Field school in Cultural Documentation is now accepting applications for its third such program. The Field School provides intensive, skills-based training in the documentation of local culture, preservation of documentary materials, and public presentation of cultural heritage for fifteen participants. The Field school is designed for adults who have a strong interest in cultural documentation, but little or no previous training or experience in this area.  Preference for admission to the program will be given to those individuals who are in a position to apply their newly-acquired skills in their communities.

This summer, participants will examine the historical changes in and contemporary nature of agrarian life in the Utah Valley in collaboration with area residents.  This topic is also the two year long research focus of BYU's Utah Heritage  Project (UHP). The UHP partners with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to provide students and teachers training in place-based research methods.
