Westchester County (New York) created a "Millennium Time Capsule" in 2001. The original intent was that the materials collected were to be buried under a tower clock (the Millennium Clock), and to be dug up in 100 years. It turned into a large project with materials solicited from members of the community and many schools participated to show what life was like in Westchester County in 2000/2001. So much material was gathered, and much of it oversized (poster-board sized) however, that it never would fit in a small capsule to be buried. The materials ended up coming to the Westchester County Archives where they were processed - housed in acid-free folders and boxes, and a container list created - and then the boxes clearly marked as sealed until the date the time capsule is to be opened - 2101. The intent is that future County Executives and heads of the Archives will be told of the existence of these materials, until the opening date arrives. In addition, a plaque was placed on the clock where the time capsule was intended to be buried, indicating the actual location of the time capsule materials at the Archives. A member of the time capsule committee asked if I had any recommendations about an "archival standard" for the project. Does anyone have any insight about this?
