Elmhurst Museums To Celebrate 10th Annual Museum Day May 21

Four Elmhurst museums will host the 10th Annual Museum Day on Sunday, May 21, 2006 from 1 pm to 5 pm. Elmhurst is unique in suburban Chicago for having four museums, two of which house collections which are national in scope. The Elmhurst Art Museum, Elmhurst Historical Museum, Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art, and Theatre Historical Society of America will be open free of charge with special family friendly activities and refreshments. Every 20 minutes a free trolley bus will shuttle visitors between the museums. People visiting all four museums will qualify for a prize drawing. Admission is free. Further information by calling the Theatre Historical Society, (630) 782-1800.

The Elmhurst Art Museum invites all to see the Transparent Watercolor Society of America’s 30th Annual Exhibition and watch a watercolorist paint. Children can learn watercolor techniques and create their own picture

At Elmhurst Historical Museum guests will experience “Here Comes the Bride”, an exhibit that tells stories of Elmhurst through wedding gowns and bridal accessories. Activities for children will be featured and refreshments will be served.

Visitors to the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art will see a special exhibit "Gemstone Animals from Idar-Oberstein, Germany” and children can go on a Treasure Hunt to find gemstones, minerals and fossils. Those finding all the treasures win a prize.

Theatre Historical Society of America will feature the chance for children to "Star Search” for famous theatres to win a prize and adults can view the new exhibit on luxurious theatre seating from Chicago’s Granada Theatre and other movie palaces.

The event is part of International Museum Day, an annual event sponsored by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the world-wide organization for the museum community. The celebration reminds governments and the general public that museums are important means of education, cultural exchange, and the development of mutual understanding and cooperation among people.
