Here’s a creepy time capsule story.

25 years ago, in the small town I live, they prepared items for a time capsule and asked for donations in order to buy an object to put it all in and bury. Instead of buying a capsule, the local mortician gave the city a baby coffin….and they used it! It is currently buried next to the city library; to be opened in 2032.

I have no plans to be there.

I just got asked this question by an organization whose 'capsule' had failed. As I understand it, the archival standard for time capsules is not to do them - leave the material in the care of a professionally staffed archive.

If you MUST time capsule - there are 'white papers' and guidelines on the net, and companies happy to sell stainless steel containers and epoxy.

Subject: Time Capsules

The small college at which I am employed is creating a time capsule to be opened in 2106. A member of the time capsule committee asked if I had any recommendations about an "archival standard" for the project. Does anyone have any insight about this?

Thank you in advance,

Cassie Robinson

I would appreciate this information too—the upcoming SAA conference is in DC as well.

BookExpoAmerica 2006 is in Washington DC this year, 19-21 May. If anyone can recommend an affordable B&B or hotel (other than pricey ones around the Convention Center), please notify me off-list. I will have a car.

	Thank you.
