Summary of Position:  The Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special
Collections Libraries (PACSCL) seeks two Collections Surveyors for its
Survey Initiative project, which is funded by a grant from the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation.  The Collections Surveyors will report to the Project
Director and be based at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

Over a 27-month period, the project staff of three will travel to 21
participating PACSCL libraries and work with institution staff to survey
their archival collections using qualitative and quantitative measures
to rank each collection's research value as well as the state of the
collection's intellectual access, physical access, housing, and physical
condition.  Collections document a wide range of subjects, including
art, history, literature, ethnic studies, religion, science, medicine,
and horticulture.  The data collected will help determine priorities for
future cataloging, processing, and preservation projects at the
participating institutions. 

This is a full-time, limited-term (27-month) position [Monday-Friday, 40
hours/week], beginning on or after July 1, 2006.  The project is
scheduled from July 2006 through September 2008.

Specific Responsibilities:
* Quickly and efficiently evaluate collections using survey criteria and
enter the data into the project database.
* Work as a team with project staff and staff of host institutions when
surveying collections.
* Perform minor preservation and labeling tasks.
* Perform other project and collections-related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree with strong liberal arts background or equivalent
experience required.  Graduate-level coursework desirable.  Extensive
general knowledge required. Experience working with archival collections
strongly preferred, and must be comfortable handling rare and/or
delicate materials.  The ability to work as part of a team and interact
with different people is essential. Strong organizational and computer
skills necessary; experience with Filemaker Pro or other database
management systems preferred. Must be able to listen well and
communicate effectively in speech and writing.  Must be able to lift 40
pounds.  

Annual salary $34,000, plus benefits.
