The METRO Digitization SIG and the METRO Solos+ SIG welcome your
attendance at their joint spring meeting.

Topic: Waterways of New York: Creating a small digital collection
using Greenstone Open Source Software (planning, process,
metadata and technical issues).
Speakers: Walter Valero, Tom Surprenant, and Claudia Perry
Wednesday, June 7, 2006, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
METRO Headquarters (57 E. 11th Street, 4th floor)
New York, New York

Walter Valero and colleagues will describe the development of a pilot
digitization project using 103 postcards of the Erie Canal and other
waterways of New York State. A subject-specific thesaurus was created,
and Greenstone Digital Library software was customized to provide
access to the scanned images and metadata. The presentation is
specifically geared to information professionals at smaller
institutions who may have limited prior knowledge of the digitization
process, or to anyone interested in the basic steps of getting started
from scratch on a small-scale digitization project.

Demo CDs with a subset of the collection will be distributed so that
attendees can experiment with various retrieval and presentation modes
in Greenstone after the session, and compare the customized interface
with the standard open source version available at
http://www.greenstone.org/.

This work was the outgrowth of two independent studies conducted at the
Graduate Library School of Queens College under the supervision of
Professors Karen Smith, Thomas Surprenant, and Claudia Perry.

Space is limited to 50, so please RSVP your intentions to Tom
Surprenant if you plan to attend ([log in to unmask]). There is no
charge for this event. Refreshments will be served.

Look forward to seeing you!
