Job Opening:   Collections Manager

Founded in 1980, the Museum of Chinese in the Americas (MoCA) is a
nationally-recognized multidisciplinary educational institution that
reclaims, preserves, and interprets the history of Chinese and their
descendants through its exhibitions, lectures, gallery tours, and
library/archives. MoCA is currently in the planning phase of its capital
expansion project.

 

MoCA seeks a full-time Collections Manager to oversee the daily
operations of its archives and collections and to oversee
collection-related activities around the museum's capital expansion
project. Materials collected by the Museum document the history of
Chinese in the Western Hemisphere, particularly in New York Chinatown.
Position open immediately. 

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

*         Develop and/or revise policies and best practices for the MoCA
archives;

*         Plan and oversee collection-related activities around the
capital expansion project;

*         Contribute to the development and implementation of
educational programs and/or exhibitions, including the permanent
exhibition for the museum's new facilities;

*         Develop a comprehensive records management policy for
programmatic and organizational materials;

*         Accession and catalog artifacts, photographs, documents,
books, and audio/visual recordings;

*         Recruit, train and supervise part-time archives staff,
interns, and volunteers;

*         Conduct research and compile historical information on
collection items;

*         Provide reference services to staff and the general public;

*         Perform outreach to potential collection donors; 

*	Serve as media spokesperson regarding collections-related issues
and activities.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

* ALA-accredited master's degree in library, information science,
archival studies or equivalent;

* Advanced coursework in cataloging and/or two years experience as a
library, archives or museum cataloger;

* Knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress Thesaurus for Graphic
Materials, and Library of Congress Subject Headings; familiarity with
General International Standard Archival Description a plus;

* Extremely organized and detail-oriented.

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

 

* Excellent English writing skills; fluency and literacy in Chinese
(Mandarin or Cantonese) a plus; 

* Hands-on experience with digital image creation and manipulation;

* Knowledge of issues regarding preservation/conservation, and
collection development; 

* Experience with computer networking and PastPerfect museum software a
plus.

 

Special consideration will be given to individuals with Chinese literacy
and experience working in an archive or with museum collections. The
ideal candidate is a flexible, outgoing and creative person with
excellent organizational skills and an ability to work independently.
Salary is commensurate with experience.
