Yes, this topic has been discussed on this list before, but I doubt that any consensus was achieved.

You could just say that archival materials are irreplaceable items with unique historical research 
value, but you're right that that probably would not impress them. I believe -- though I can't 
remember where I heard this -- that the standard assessment for archives, manuscripts, 
correspondence, etc., is $1.00 per page.
