Dear List Members

The Department of Information Studies, University of Wales Aberystwyth, as one of the UK institutions providing postgraduate education and training in Archives and Records Management, is conducting a survey on 'Professional Education and Training in Archive Management'.

This survey aims to collect and analyse the views of archive professionals (qualified / current students, internationally as well as from within the UK) as to their education and training needs, and at what stage education to develop knowledge and key skills should be delivered.  As the potential range of skills and knowledge required by archival professionals expands, there are limitations to what can be addressed within postgraduate / graduate studies programmes; particularly in contexts such as the UK where programmes are delivered over only one academic year.  The findings of this survey should help inform approaches to the future development of programme content and accompanying continuing professional development schemes.

The survey itself is aimed at individuals working in a professional capacity in the management of non-current / historical archival resources; while this may encompass modern records management, the survey is not intended to address the specific needs of those working exclusively in the records and information management fields.  Although designed with the practising professional in mind, the views of archival policy / strategy officers, educators / trainers and consultants are also welcome.

The survey is now open until 5 June and can be completed online at: www.survey.bris.ac.uk/aber/archive
It is completed anonymously, and comprises 14 mandatory questions which should take around 10 minutes to complete - it is possible to 'save' a partially completed survey and return to complete it at a later time.

Findings will be disseminated at professional events (including the UK FARMER conference 'Developing the 21st Century Professional: a learning continuum for archivists and records managers' 13-15 June, held at Aberystwyth www.aber.ac.uk/visitors/farmer/, and the ACA conference 28 June-1 July, St. Johns, Canada) and through publication in due course.

Thank you for your participation.

Sarah
