Overview:  The Archives and Manuscripts 
Department of the John J. Burns Library of Rare 
Books and Special Collections is seeking an 
Assistant Archivist to work with University 
records and, to a lesser extent, with literary 
and historical manuscripts.  The University 
Archives was established in 1975 and contains 
approximately 3,300 linear feet of records.  The 
literary and historical collections are equally 
large and emphasize Irish history and culture, 
the works of British Catholic authors, the 
history and practice of nursing, American 
detective fiction, history and culture of the 
Caribbean, Catholic liturgy and life in America, 
and the history of the city of Boston.

Duties: Reporting to the Head of Archives and 
Manuscripts, the Assistant Archivist has primary 
responsibility for the daily operation of the 
University Archives, including the accessioning 
of Boston College records and the creation of 
original cataloging records for all department 
collections for the local online catalog and 
contributing them to OCLC. Other 
responsibilities  include the arrangement and 
description of unprocessed collections primarily 
in the University Archives but also assisting 
with processing of the literary and historical 
collections as needed;  providing reference 
service to external and internal researchers 
using the University Archives; aiding the library 
webmaster in maintaining the library homepage 
(i.e. updating department's collection 
information and designing virtual exhibits); 
converting finding aids to electronic format; 
planning and implementing records management and 
outreach activities; and supervising student 
assistants and library science graduate school interns.

Qualifications:
Required:  ALA-accredited MLS, two courses of 
graduate archival education, and experience 
processing archives or manuscripts collections.
Preferred:  second Master’s degree, in history or 
literature; one to three years of archival 
experience in a research or academic institution; 
familiarity with cataloging of archival and 
manuscript materials using OCLC or another bibliographic utility.
Must be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, and patrons.
Must have good written and oral communication 
skills.  Must have demonstrated ability to 
acquire and upgrade technical skills.

Highly desirable: experience with USMARC and EAD; 
familiarity with archival descriptive standards, 
such as DACS; experience supervising students; 
and demonstrated ability to upgrade technical skills.
