TITLE:  			Assistant Curator and Project Manager
DEPARTMENT:  	Exhibitions Office

SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Exhibits Manager, this position will serve as the Assistant Curator and Project Manager for Ptolemy in the Renaissance and oversee the continuation of the Rotating Displays program.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Assistant Curator/Project Manager will be responsible for all aspects of the production of the exhibition Ptolemy in the Renaissance (opening September 2007), including: supervising and coordinating the work of the curators; serving as liaison between the curators and the exhibition designer; providing research, writing, and editing services as needed; serving as exhibit registrar (database management, coordinating conservation, photography); overseeing object prep; supervising installation contractors; and budget oversight.  Responsibilities related to the Rotating Displays program include creating program schedule; coordinating object selection and conservation review; editing text; and preparing and installing materials.  The Assistant Curator/Project Manager will also take a lead role in the development and implementation of a template that will be used for future exhibition websites. departmental goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:  MA in public history or museum studies required; knowledge of curatorial and conservation issues and familiarity with the history of cartography preferred; significant experience working with exhibit production or relevant project management; excellent writing, editing and communication skills; computer skills including database management (FileMakerPro preferred), word processing, and internet searching; website design experience preferred; strong attention to detail, trouble-shooting skills, and the ability to work independently required;  physical strength and mobility with the ability to lift 25 pounds.  

SCHEDULE:  Full-time, 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday with occasional evenings and weekend hours as necessary.  Temporary position funded through December 2007 with no possibility of extension.  Exempt position.

TITLE:		Exhibits Assistant

DEPARTMENT:	Exhibitions Office

SUMMARY:  Reporting to the Exhibits Manager, the Exhibits Assistant assists the Exhibits Manager with clerical, administrative, research, and hands-on on tasks to support the planning, coordination, and production of exhibitions at the Newberry from the initial development of ideas to installation and dismounting of exhibits. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Exhibits Assistant provides administrative support to the Exhibits Program including but not limited to handling routine correspondence and telephone inquiries; maintaining hard copy and electronic exhibition records and files; serving as registrar for exhibition projects; and maintaining galleries and exhibits storage areas in good order.  Other responsibilities may include collections-based and internet research for upcoming exhibition projects; assisting with proof-reading and fact checking; and assisting with exhibition installations.  The Exhibits Assistant is also responsible for all administrative tasks related to the annual Chicago Calligraphy Collective exhibition and all other tasks or activities as needed for the achievement of departmental goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor's degree, preferably in the Humanities; library research experience required; experience handling art, archives or rare books desirable; experience with or willingness to learn basic exhibition skills including mat cutting and label mounting; detailed-oriented; ability to handle a wide range of tasks; good personal, telephone, writing, and editing skills; interest in public history or museum studies desirable; strong computer skills required including proficiency with Microsoft Word and FileMakerPro or other database; experience with Excel and Photoshop preferred; physical strength and mobility required with the ability to lift 25 pounds.

SCHEDULE:  Part-time, 17.5 hours per week.  Hours to be fulfilled Monday through Friday during regular working hours with occasional evening and weekend hours as required.  Non-exempt position.   

SALARY:		$10.00 - $11.00/hour dependent upon qualifications and experience.
