Curators (Faculty)
Multiple positions available immediately
The Ohio State University Libraries seeks innovative and dynamic
applicants for two full-time, tenure-track assistant professor positions
(one in the Cartoon Research Library and another in the Jerome Lawrence
and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute Library) who will report to
the appropriate special collections Curator.
The Cartoon Research Library's primary mission is to develop a
comprehensive research collection of materials documenting American
printed cartoon art (editorial cartoons, comic strips, comic books,
graphic novels, sports cartoons, and magazine cartoons) and to provide
access to these collections. It is the largest and most
comprehensive academic research facility documenting printed cartoon art
in the United States. The library moved to its current state-of-the-art
quarters in 1990. Current holdings include more than 370,000
graphic materials, including 240,000 original cartoons; more than 34,500
books; more than 51,000 serial titles; and more than 2,800 linear feet of
manuscript materials.
The Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute Library
collects, preserves, maintains, and makes accessible research materials
pertaining to performing arts. The Institute Library serves as an archive
for performing artists and organizations including playwrights,
designers, choreographers, performers, producing professional
organizations, and theatre and dance companies. The Institute is
administered jointly by The Ohio State University Libraries and the
Department of Theatre and is intended to encourage a broad range of
research into performance.
Positions are responsible for:
- Working with the Curator to oversee day-to-day operations;
- Serving as principal contact and spokesperson for the collection in
the absence of the Curator;
- Providing assistance with reference and research services;
- Participating in collection development and donor relations with the
Curator;
- Supervising and participating in the arrangement and description of
collection materials (including, but not limited to: special collections,
archives, papers, manuscripts, original art, published materials,
audio-visual materials, and digital materials);
- Collaborating with Special Collections Cataloging to create
collection level records of holdings and prepare finding aids and
inventories in Encoded Archival Description (EAD) or other appropriate
metadata schemes;
- Maintaining and preserving collection materials;
- Establishing processing priorities and sequence, and maintaining
records of the processing status;
- Receiving incoming archival and special collections and maintaining
the library’s accession records;
- Supervising students and volunteers;
- Attending appropriate professional meetings;
- Participating in the planning and execution of exhibitions, digital
initiatives, and programs;
- Actively seeking grant support for projects;
- Interacting with faculty and students in teaching and research.
The Associate Curator positions have faculty status with accompanying
University expectations and requirements for tenure and promotion.
Library faculty members are evaluated on their teaching,
research/publication, and service. They are eligible to receive
release time (up to 20 percent) in support of meeting the requirements
for promotion and tenure. The tenure initiating unit for the
curator positions is the Ohio State University Libraries.
Qualifications Required: MLS (or equivalent) accredited by the
American Library Association. A master’s degree with
specialization in archives or a master’s degree in museum studies may be
an alternative to the MLS. Experience in processing special and
archival collections; experience creating finding aids; experience
providing reference service. The ability to communicate clearly and
effectively with faculty, donors, students and others is also mandatory.
Demonstrated ability and experience with the management of collections,
including but not limited to: acquisitions, donor relations, physical
organization, cataloging, exhibition, publications, and reader services.
Extensive and current knowledge of practices relating to the
identification, access, control, organization and digitization of visual
materials.
Required for Cartoon Research Library position: knowledge
through course work and/or relevant scholarly activity and experience of
the history of graphic arts, especially all genres of printed cartoon
art.
Required for Theatre Research Library position: knowledge through
course work and/or relevant scholarly activity and experience of the
history of the performing arts, including the creative process,
production, and scholarship.
Qualifications Desired: Knowledge of Encoded Archival Description
(EAD) or other appropriate metadata schemes. Knowledge of foreign
languages. General familiarity with computer applications in special
collections; active participation in appropriate professional
organizations; and a record of successful supervisory
responsibility. Relevant professional experience in an academic
library and demonstrated ability to meet faculty requirements for
research and publication.
Salary and rank: $41,000 minimum; faculty rank and salary
dependent upon experience and qualifications.
