I agree that a formal education is important for those who would become 
librarians and archivists.  I would rather see it as an undergraduate 
program instead of a graduate program.  My graduate education at San José 
State helped greatly to prepare me to work as an archivist and librarian, 
I've done both.  My first jobs in both fields were of more help as training 
than most of my college courses.  I've never met a librarian or archivist 
who didn't feel the same way.  All undergraduate programs would also be 
better training grounds if the general education requirements were scaled 
back, but that's another point of discussion entirely.
