Most patrons of public libraries are unaware of the difference between a
circulation desk clerk and a librarian and startled to know a master's
degree is involved. Regarding archivists, as soon as people stop saying "A
what?" after I tell them what I do, the profession will have arrived.
Meanwhile, educational requirements when reeled off to the uninitiated at
least provide a modicum of respect.
