Dear Colleagues: A few questions for those wearing the hat of University or College Archivist. I'm in the process of creating a Classification System/Guide based on the model provided in William Maher's book The Management of College and University Archives. Maher's illustration is very helpful, but I would love to see other examples of Classification Guides that folks are utilizing in academic archives. I'd also be very interested to hear any advice (e.g., do this; don't do this) regarding the establishment of Classification Guides. And finally, I'm curious to know how many folks incorporate or use functional analysis in some manner (as laid out by Helen Samuels in her book Varsity Letters) to guide them in appraising and arranging University records. Any thoughts, opinions, and insight would be most welcome and appreciated. I receive the messages in digest form, so a response to me directly would also be appreciated. Thank you, Mary -- Mary McKay, CA University Archivist Mark O.
