Responsibilities


Brock University's James A. Gibson Library seeks an innovative and
dynamic leader for the position of Head, Special Collections and
Archives. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Collection
Resources, you will provide strategic leadership and vision in the
management of the Library's Special Collections and Archives.
Responsibilities in Special Collections and Archives include collection
development; organization, maintenance and preservation of collections;
reference and instruction; promotion and outreach services;
collaborative development of digitization projects; cultivation of donor
relations; records management of the University archives; supervision of
department staff; and operational management of the Department's
facilities. You may also be assigned instruction, collection development
and liaison duties in specific subject disciplines.

Qualifications


Qualifications required: Master's degree from an ALA accredited library
program or its equivalent, or a Master of Archival Science; minimum 3
years' experience in a special collections and/or archival library
setting; strong leadership, management and supervisory skills; ability
to take initiative and work collaboratively with colleagues within the
Library and with other campus and community partners; excellent
organizational, communication and interpersonal skills; creative problem
solving skills; experience in collection development of special
collections and/or archival materials; familiarity with rare book
practices and the antiquarian book trade; knowledge of issues, trends,
principles and practices in archival and special collections including
facilities management, collection security, preservation and records
management; demonstrated knowledge of established and evolving standards
for digitization including experience or familiarity with emerging
metadata schemes and tools such as DC, EAD, TEI, XML, RDF and OAI;
knowledge of and commitment to learn and use emerging technologies in
the provision of library collections and services.

Preferred: Experience in developing print and digital collections;
additional advanced degree; experience working in an academic or
research library; knowledge of the history and culture of the Niagara
region.

Notes


Work Environment: The holdings of Special Collections and Archives
include the Niagara Collection, the Masonic Collection, the Loyalist
Collection, and the Archives, including the University\'s records, and
various municipal records. The Department houses approximately 200
linear metres of private and University archives, as well as non-textual
materials and over 20,000 Special Collection titles. Areas of strength
include the Niagara Collection, which encompasses settlement history,
geography, geology, military history, economics, planning, urban
renewal, and literature. The collection holds extensive materials on the
War of 1812, the Welland Canal, and early travellers' journals.
Departmental staff includes one support staff member, one Project
Archivist, and student assistants on an occasional basis. The Special
Collections and Archives Department consists of the Reading Room,
Special Collections Stacks, Municipal Records Room, Archives, workroom
and office, occupying 3690 square feet on Floor 10 of the James A.
Gibson Library. The area is monitored for climate and humidity control.
