POSITION  ANNOUNCEMENT

 

Consultant (Archivist)

Background:  UW System Administration and the UW System Institute on
Race and Ethnicity have received a grant from the Helen Bader Foundation
to assist America's Black Holocaust Museum, 2233 N. 4th Street,
Milwaukee, in the development of a collections management policy/plan
and in the archiving of materials.  This work may facilitate the
creation of a future Center for Black Holocaust Studies.

 

Time Frame:  The estimated start date is July 17, 2006.  The grant
expires on December 31, 2006, with a strong possibility of extension
through the entire 2007 calendar year.  

 

Employment Terms:  The weekly schedule and hours are negotiable, but it
is envisioned that the employee will work 20-25 hours/week.  The hourly
payment will be approximately $25.00.  The primary place of employment
will be America's Black Holocaust Museum (herein ABHM), and the
day-to-day supervisor will be Corry Joe Biddle, Museum Administrator,
ABHM.  The individual will also interact with a grant implementation
committee and, possibly, with the ABHM board of directors.  The
individual will be hired on a contract basis with no formal
employer-employee relationship with either ABHM, the UW System Institute
on Race and Ethnicity, or the Helen Bader Foundation.  The Consultant
(Archivist) position includes no fringe benefits.

 

Qualifications:  Master's degree in Library and Information Science,
History, or a related field from an accredited university.  Graduate
level coursework or training in records management and archival
procedures.  Strong organizational skills, computer/database/software
skills, and communication/interpersonal skills are a must.  It is
strongly preferred that the individual have a background in museum
studies and/or library records management, with experience in electronic
management, digital preservation, and museum preservation and
conservation standards.  Knowledge of related legal issues regarding the
acquisition of materials and the transfer/ownership of materials would
be a plus, as would knowledge of African-American history.

 

Duties:  The following is a general itemization of anticipated job
duties, although these are subject to alteration as the project
proceeds:

 

(i)  Development of an overall collections management policy and plan
for ABHM

(ii)  Inventorying and describing of current holdings, documents,
papers, and artifacts

(iii)  Prepare papers and documents for digitization, and artifacts for
display

(iv)  Liaison with other museums, archivists, libraries, and academic
researchers

(v)  Supervision of graduate student interns

(vi)  Development of grant proposals to seek additional support
