Dear List,
Whenever "assigning accesion numbers" pops up, there has always been a lack
of concensus due to institutional needs etc.
At any rate, I thought I'd post this question coming from a previous museum
background where there was no "promised gift" per se, just full acquisition.
For our collections, I have been assigning accession numbers to our promised
gifts as a loan number prefixed with a "P".
Recently, a "promised gift" has been formally accessioned into the collection.
Do we retain the "promised gift" accession number with a "P" or do we assign
a whole new, formal accession number while retaining the older number in
brackets?
Perhaps issues related to accession numbers, and a possible unified
approach, is now a more pertinent issue amongst museum studies /archives
programs...
Insight and advice would be most appreciated on or off list.

All the best,
