This reminds me of a situtation at the Library of Congress (in the 1960s I believe). They had a large collection of Bibles in an archaic language and no one on the staff who could read enough of the language to catalog them. So they hired some retired clergy from a particular religious branch who could read the language. LC gave them a 6-week crash course in descriptive cataloging and let them loose on the Bibles. The result was more than satisfactory. They were perfectly suited to the job because of existing skills and just-right training. Obviously they would not have been hired as permanent catalogers, dept. heads, or payroll clerks. I see both sides of this discussion. There are many archivists and librarians doing excellent jobs without advanced degrees. Many of those with advanced degrees don't know much until they have some on-the-job guidance and experience (ahem, yours truly). And lots in between. Pace all. |((| Ellen Chapman, MLS, MA, CA |))| Archives & Manuscripts Department |((| University of Hawaii at Manoa Library |))| (808) 944-7656 A posting from the Archives & Archivists LISTSERV List sponsored by the Society of American Archivists, www.archivists.org.
