In response to Carolyn's question about which credentials are "better," as a Ph.D. candidate in history, I'm getting excluded from consideration for many archivist positions because I do not have the MLS, though I am academically and professionally trained to be an archivist. I don't think that there's a right way to go about becoming an archivist -- whether it's from a graduate history perspective or a MLS perspective. This has long been a debate in the archival world. Beth Moser A. Elizabeth Moser Ph.D. Candidate, History NAU Box 6023 Flagstaff, AZ 86011-6023 Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006 15:19:10 +0000 From: Carolyn Vega <[log in to unmask]> I am a girl getting ready to start her MLS / Archives Certificate Program, and I want to be an archivist! Am I going about this all wrong?! Is it better to have a MA or PhD in history with training in archival work? Or do institutions want librarians as archvists? Everyone says something different & I don't know which way to go... and I'm scheduled to start the MLS in the Fall. Thanks, Carolyn A.
