RESEARCH SERVICES MANAGER/ARCHIVIST
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Manages the work of Research Services which serves the information and research needs of the Foundation's leadership, staff and outside researchers, including scholars, and the grantee community. Serves as historian of the Foundation. Works with other units of Information Services to arrange for the retention, processing and preservation of the Foundation's archival records. Develops and works on special projects, particularly digital conversion and electronic document repository projects. Manages the Foundations Research Center. Serves as liaison to the research, archives and library communities.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Hires, trains and supervises reference and research services staff
- Participates in Information Services' management team
- Manages and sets priorities for archival processing projects and research and reference work
- Prepares and monitors Research Services budget
- Works with other Information Services staff in collection development and the licensing of online services and content
- Coordinates with Office of Program Management to ensure that resources for learning are available long-term, and that learning needs of the Foundation are adequately served
- Oversees the Research Centers' physical collection, including circulation and inter-library loans
- Works proactively with Foundation staff to determine research needs and promotes use of research services
- Serves as initial primary research contact for Foundation staff, and outside researchers
- Coordinates complex research projects, including analysis projects and the researching and writing of reports
- Serves as primary resource to Foundation staff and outside inquirers on the history of the Foundation
- Oversees access to the Foundation's oral history collection
- Reviews all requests for access to Foundation records or for permission to publish from outside researchers
- Participates in special projects of Information Services, Administrative Services, and the Foundation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters degree in humanities, social sciences, archival/library studies, or related discipline
- Five or more years' experience with archives, indexing and information retrieval systems
- Experience in archival or library reference services and excellent research skills
- Exceptional analytical, communication, interpersonal, writing and presentation skills
- Strong customer service orientation
- Managerial or supervisory experience, including project management.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of the Foundation, its history, and its programs
- Knowledge of the fields of philanthropy, and of the other fields in which the Foundation works
- Experience with historical research and writing
- Knowledge of digitization and electronic records issues.
